A Few of My Favorite Things

I am a lover of all things media and arts - books, movies, music, make-up & shoes and I love to exchange favorite recommendations with friends. Here's my on-going list of my favorite things. ūüíõ

I am a self-confessed avid shoe and book a-holic. Using books as an intellectual vacation, I listen to one on Audible while I cook, clean, and exercise, and read one at night before bed. My latest read, Meet Me in Monaco, by Hazel Gaynor took me through the romance and wedding of Grace Kelly to Prince Rainier of Monaco, through the eyes of a young French perfumer and an English news photographer. As the author educated me about the life of a professional “nose” and described the unique and unforgettable fragrances the protagonist was creating for Grace Kelly, I too became interested in finding a unique and unforgettable fragrance for myself.¬†

I went down a rabbit hole researching fragrance houses I hadn’t heard of before and was delighted to find I could order little sample sets from each one. My favorites came from Carner Barcelona and Eight & Bob. With titles like “Besos” and “Latin Lover,” Carner’s scents are unique and full of character. I loved “Latin Lover” – it’s complex, feminine, yet earthy and a little spicy as you would naturally expect of a Latin lover!

Eight & Bob’s story sounds like something that very much needs to become and book and a movie. Our main character, Albert, a young French aristocrat in the 1930’s, with the help of his trusty friend and butler, is a perfume connoisseur who enjoys gifting his wealthy and elite friends with his bespoke creations, yet always refuses proposals to sell it.¬†¬†

During summer vacation, on the French Riviera (C√īte d’Azur), this aristocrat met and got on very well with a young American student who was touring France in a convertible: John F. K. John’s charm and congeniality persuaded Albert to leave him a sample of his cologne with a note sent to his hotel the following morning:

“In this bottle, you will find the dash of French glamour that your American personality lacks.”

Yes I feel a bit like Dieter from the SNL Sprokets¬†Sketch when I wear Birkenstocks, but this bright happy pink is irresistible¬†to my feet, and of course are so comfortable, if I am standing all day, I don’t pay for it later when I sport these sandals.

Maybe it’s because it takes me back to feeling like a teen again on the last day of school, heading to a Bon Jovi¬†concert.¬† Jean mini’s are back in a big way. If you want to try one out again as an alternative to shorts this summer, Amazon has a few options with price tags low enough to banish the guilt for trying and buying. This one fits great and has a distressed look like maybe I DID hold on to my mini-skirt from high school (my hips wouldn’t budge back into my high school skirts, but I digress).¬† This one runs SMALL so size UP (it’s not the half bag of Jose’s chips we ate, it’s the skirt.)

As much as I love sneakers I would rather have a few cute ones than sink all my cash into one higher-priced pair. All of my Dolce Vita sneakers and high tops are extremely comfortable. I have high arches and sometimes sneakers hurt my feet by the end of the day. I can work, cook, and take a walk with my hubby and the dog in these shoes with nada problemas.

This in-shower self tanner is THE BOMB. I usually am terrified to use at home self tanners because it ends up making me look like an orange oompa-loompa with weird stripes up the backs of my legs, etc. This glides on your wet skin while you are still in the shower (I turn off the shower) so there’s very little chance of missing¬† a spot or overdoing it.¬†
